Barcelona traffic simulator

Every vehicle on the map is simulated on Barcelona's real streets, lanes and traffic lights, with the traffic the city's counters measure on a weekday morning. It opens at 08:00, in the rush hour.

• Move around: drag to pan, right-drag to rotate, scroll to zoom.
• Follow a vehicle: click any car or bus, and the camera rides along with it.
• Change the time or the weather in the panel: traffic and light follow them.
• More controls (signals, traffic-state layer, real data, what-if scenarios): switch the panel to Expert.

What you are looking at

A microscopic traffic simulation of Barcelona: every car, motorbike, van and TMB bus is an agent driving on the real street network from OpenStreetMap, with its real lanes, one-way rules, turn restrictions, bridges and tunnels.

• Demand comes from the city's traffic counters (Open Data BCN), calibrated for a weekday and following the hour of the day. ×1.00 is the real demand.
• Signals are the city's signalised junctions, with timings inferred and optimised from the flows (the official plans aren't public).
• Live syncs the clock with Barcelona and nudges the demand every minute so that the simulated congestion follows the city's live traffic feed.
• Traffic state colours the official road segments as the city reports them (observed) or as simulated, on the same 1–5 scale: fluid dense congested.
• Buses follow the TMB lines and timetables; trams (whole city) run the Trambaix and Trambesòs lines on their timetable; pedestrians cross at signalised junctions and bikes ride the cycle network.
• Counters are the city's counting stations: each compares the flow counted on an average weekday at this hour with the simulated one, green when they match.
• X-ray fades the ground to show the covered stretches of the Rondes.
